UNIQLOOKS Local Contest
UNIQLOOKS is a global online platform for UNIQLO that will make it simple for people around the world to share and enjoy UNIQLO. Leveraging on the power of connectivity, UNIQLOOKS is a portal to unprecedented fashion fun.
The competition searches for the Top 10 UNIQLOOKS entry uploaded from Singapore, from which 2 Grand Prize winners will be picked. These grand prize winners get an all-expense-paid three-nights stay for two in New York, exclusive invite to UNIQLO’s 5th Ave Global Flagship Store Opening party and be the cover faces for Catalog magazine.
Famous VJ Utt gets the competition runway event started!
Guest Judge Felicia Chin looking stunning in a sequin gold, blinged up slim cut dress and leather jacket.
The panel of judges: Celebrity stylist Trey Wong, artiste Felicia Chin and URBAN editor Tee Hun Ching. Other judges not in the photo are Celebrity makeup artist Clarence Lee, MTV VJ Holly, two managing directors of UNIQLO Singapore, Satoshi Onoguchi and Albert Chew.
Uniqlo’s fresh and bright coloured basic tees were utilised by the competition’s participants for the runway show at Ion Sky. I was astounded by the level of creativity showcased by the participants, matching their entire outfits in the most fashion forward street style with highlights of bold colours on their UNIQLO tee shirts, epitomising the cheerful spectrum of colours attributed to the UNIQLO brand image. Most importantly, the contestants worked the runway like they were professional models, this was a pleasant surprise as most were amateurs to the fashion scene.
The runway competition begins for the TOP 20 looks!
Creativity was being promoted! The participants upped the ante by dressing up basic tees and tank tops with a kaleidoscope of blazers and denim shirts which are very much trending in the current fashion landscape.
What took me by surprise were the bottoms selected, they were well thought out, the girls used patterned skirts, high waist cut shorts, 3/4 pants and even a dressy pleated skirt embellished with a belt to create a glamourous evening look out of the humble t-shirt! Competition was definitely demanding as contestants were geared with full determination to win the trip to New York City!
The Top 10 looks after the guests and judges have decided who appealed and should move on to the next round:
Sartorial choices could be seen on all top 10 contestants. Ranging from dapper suits to posh high waisted pants and well fitted shirts and jackets, and even shorts paired with meggings.
Street style is observed to have been pushed forwards to a whole new level!
The Grand Finals winners are ***(DRUM ROLL)***: Viona Wang and Nick Chong Jin!!! Congrats!

Famous local cult label DEPRESSION founded by Designers Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh has a huge following in Singapore for the style conscious who want to look unconventional wearing its boundary pushing cutting edge designs. Expect ironic and humourous designs aimed to entertain. DEPRESSION has been stocked internationally as well at Triple Major (Beijing), Deeplay (Taipei) and Board of Trade (Vancouver).
For PARCO next NEXT’s Nation Pride happening on 6 August 2011 till 15 August 2011, DEPRESSION launches its first ever diffusion line featuring designs for Kids Wear. Appropriately created for Nation Pride, the collection would be a family experience, with matching adult and kid sizes for a style conscious parent to start educating and developing their kids sartorial sensibilities from a young age.
I observe that learning to dress sensibly with style comes from experience and exposure, which could well nurture young minds, giving them exposure to appreciate local designs. Time for a new era of children’s wear!
Women’s oversized ‘heart’ jersey top $79
Children’s Girl ‘heart’ top $59
For women’s wear and girl’s wear: An impressive overall unique Heart shaped t shirt with an innovative reversible design (red and black) shifts away from the perception of a conventional tee shirt. Whimsical with a heart motif placed in a small pocket, and Wearable for a casual weekend out with the kids, parents wearing this design together with their children would certainly create a head turning effect to other envious onlookers.
Men’s heart-in-pocket t-shirt $49
Children’s Boy t-shirt $39
For men’s wear and boy’s wear: A tee shirt with an insert chest pocket potrays a cheerful heart being placed into it. I find it to be very much wearable and would bring forth a warm family spirit when the whole family wears the LOVE series.
The ‘LOVE’ series will debut at ‘NATION PRIDE – HOME’, at Millenia Walk, Great Hall, and will be sold at DEPRESSION’s Parco boutique level 2 as well. The public retail-cum-art installation will start from 6 August 2011 and run till 15 August 2011, and will also feature other local designers and their works for National Day.
“We are making a statement about how proud we are to be a Singapore-based label. Our series is titled ‘I LOVE SINGAPORE’. We’re re-inventing the classic Tee with heart-shaped motifs and prints,” said DEPRESSION co-owner Kenny Lim, adding that for the first time, the label would also put out kids’ wear.

PARCO next NEXT
Fashion design incubator project PARCO next NEXT is a joint initiative between Parco (Singapore) Pte Ltd and the Textile & Fashion Federation (Singapore), and supported by SPRING Singapore. Launched in March 2010, it provides over 20 young Singapore fashion designers retail space at PARCO Marina Bay, as well as an 18-month training and mentorship programme to pick up business essentials going forward with an impending third batch of designers!
A PARCO next NEXT initiative for the upcoming Singapore National Day celebrations is Nation Pride 2011, an art installation by the best of local designers showcasing the best homegrown buys, from local fashion, music, books and spa products, to art and photography.
An event highlight for fashion folk – a tribute to our warm weather favourite: the humble Tee. Guest designers Kenny Lim and Andrew Loh (DEPRESSION), Frederick Lee (Frederick Lee), JR Chan (JASON), Keith Png (KOOPS), Max Tan (max.tan), Alfie Leong (Mu), Nic Wong & Daniel Loh (SATURDAY), have joined PARCO next NEXT’s current 23 designers in creating limited edition Nation Pride-inspired Tees. I had the opportunity to review the T-shirts and I find much creativity embodied in the designs.
